What is CCTV?
CCTV defines closed circuit Television and is generally referred to as video control. ‘Closed-circuit’ means, unlike ‘normal’ TV broadcast to the public as a whole, that broadcasts are usually transmitted to a small (closed) number of monitors. CCTV networks are widely used for the identification, deterrence, and recording of traffic violations, but have different applications.
In order to track the launch of V2 rockets, CCTV was first created by German scientists in 1942. It was eventually used in researching the atomic bomb by American scientists.

For surveillance or other private purposes, a CCTV Camera can produce images or recordings. Either video or digital image devices may be cameras. The inventor of the CCTV camera was Walter Bruch. A CCTV camera’s main goal is to capture and transform light into a video signal. CCTV is supported by a CCD sensor (charge-coupled device). The CCD can turn light into an electric signal and then process it into a video signal which can be captured or shown on the computer.
How does CCTV Camera work?
Analogical and digital systems operate very differently, but current CCTV Camera networks are using an analogue to digital conversion software and hardware. This process is named as retrofitting.
A typical CCTV system includes:
- One or more cameras, each with an Image sensor lens (analogue or digital).
- Recorder – either a traditional analogue systems video tape recorder or a Digital Systems DVR or Network Video Recorder (NVR).
- Cables – for optical or coaxial analogue cables either RJ45
- One or more screens for transferring images
- A camera captures pictures using picture sensors through the lens.
- These images (and sometimes audio as well) are sent wirelessly or via cable to the recorder or tape. Analytical software and other smart technology may be employed by recorders for data scanning and for sending automatic warnings to either people or other systems and devices.
- Videos are captured, saved, and analysed by this Video Management Program (VMS). The software uses auto-learning algorithms that use functions such as motion detection, face recognition, individual counting etc. The software is also self-learning.
- Monitor(s) may be tracked either passively (by software) or active (by individuals). It is possible and overseen by CCTV networks themselves.
